What is a snickerdoodle?

Snickerdoodle cookies are known for their crispy surface and the delicious heartwarming sugar and cinnamon coating. The cookies are soft, and chewy.

History of snickerdoodle

If you wonder where the word snickerdoodle comes from, the word is derived from the German word “Schneckennudeln."

It is safe to say that these cookies actually come from Germany. However, some claim that the cookies are purely British, and the name was taken up on a fairytale hero named ‘Snickerdoodle’ way back in the 1900s.

Well, whatever the history be, we are just happy we have these cookies to bring an instant smile to our face.

Are snickerdoodles and sugar cookies the same thing?

Well, technically speaking, snickerdoodles are sugar cookies. However, there is a slight difference.

Most of the time, sugar cookies are coated with an icing, whereas snickerdoodle cookies are coated with a mixture of sugar and cinnamon.

The rich and warm flavor of cinnamon makes all the difference.

Tips for making snickerdoodle cookies

Here are a few tips that will help you make the perfect cookies.

  • Make sure all the ingredients are at room temperature.
  • Make sure the cream of tartar and baking soda are not outdated. The two ingredients play a vital role in the texture of the cookie. So, make sure these ingredients are fresh.
  • Make sure not to skip adding the cream of tartar. It is what provides that tang that snickerdoodles are known for.
  • When storing the cookies, make sure there are completely cool. Otherwise, they can become soggy.

How to store snickerdoodle cookies?

You can store snickerdoodle just like you store any other cookie.

That is by placing it in an air-tight container and no need to refrigerate them, they can stay at room temperature.

How to freeze?

Snickerdoodles are a great cookie to freeze until later.

All you need to do is stick the cookie sheet with the balls of snickerdoodle dough into the freezer. Once the dough balls have frozen, move them to a plastic freezer bag or other freezer safe container.

You are then able to bake individual servings over a period of time or prepare the dough ahead of time and cook it later.

When you are ready to cook the cookies, just move the number of cookies to a cookie sheet and cook as directed in the recipe, but add an additional 2-3 minutes on.
