Peppermint Patties
The holidays just got a little sweeter with these easy homemade Peppermint Patties.
Crisp and refreshing peppermint candy encased in smooth dark chocolate - what could be better?
These cute bite-sized candies are easy to make and are a great edible gift or addition to your Christmas cookie trays.
Ingredients
Sweetened Condensed Milk: Make sure to use sweetened condensed milk for the best flavor.
Peppermint Extract: Pure peppermint extract has a great strong flavor.
Powdered Sugar: Sift the powdered sugar to avoid lumps.
Dark Chocolate Chips: Use high-quality dark chocolate chips, but you can switch it out if you prefer a different type of chocolate.
Vegetable Oil: A small amount of oil helps to smooth out the melted chocolate.
How To Make
Start by mixing together the sweetened condensed milk, peppermint extract, and powdered sugar in a large bowl.
Stir until everything is well combined and a thick dough begins to form.
It may be a little sticky, but that's okay.
Next, lightly dust a flat surface with powdered sugar.
Roll the peppermint dough out to about ¼ inch thickness using a rolling pin.
Be sure to sprinkle just a bit of powdered sugar on top of the dough to keep it from sticking.
Once rolled out, use a small cookie cutter—about 1 inch in diameter—to cut out your peppermint patties.
Arrange the cut-out pieces on a cookie sheet or another flat surface, which will make it easier to transfer them to the fridge.
Repeat this process until all the dough is used up.
Once your patties are cut, place the tray in the fridge and let them chill for about 45 minutes, giving them time to firm up and set.
While the patties are cooling, it's time to melt the chocolate. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the dark chocolate chips and vegetable oil.
Heat in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth.
Be patient with this process to avoid burning the chocolate.
Once melted, stir the mixture until it's glossy and fully combined.
After the peppermint patties have chilled, remove them from the fridge.
Using a fork, carefully lift each patty and dip it into the melted chocolate, making sure it's fully coated.
Place the dipped patties on a piece of parchment or wax paper to set.
Return the chocolate-covered patties to the fridge and let them chill for at least 30 minutes until the chocolate coating is firm and set.
Once they're ready, you can enjoy them right away, or store them in the fridge or freezer for a cool treat whenever you like!
Tips & Tricks
Here are some tips for making these Peppermint Patties even better:
Sift powdered sugar: Sift the powdered sugar before adding it to avoid lumps and achieve a smoother dough
Make them thicker or thinner: If you prefer a thicker mint filling, roll the dough out to ½ inch. For a more delicate bite, roll it thinner.
Freeze them: For a crisp, refreshing treat, store the patties in the freezer instead of the fridge. They stay firm and are perfect for a chilled snack!
Personalize the chocolate coating: Drizzle extra melted chocolate on top for a decorative touch or sprinkle with crushed peppermint candies for added crunch and flavor.
Leftovers/Storage
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 1-2 weeks.
